A smart, sassy, funny and appealing old-school comedy, created by Kari Lizer, the former writer of Will & Grace, the series revolves around Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Arrested Development, Veep), a hysterical mother and owner of a women-only gym known for its 30-minute workout. Divorced for two years from Richard Campbell, Sr. (Clark Gregg, The Shield, CSI: NY), she lives with her 8-year-old son, Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon, Desperate Housewives, Happy Monster Band), and her brother, Matthew (Hamish Linklater, Ugly Betty, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), who constantly makes sure to remind her that hitting the snooze button on all her dreams and needs is a huge mistake.
Actually, Christine still has feelings for Richard. The plot thickens when he gets a new girlfriend (Emily Rutherfurd, Drop Dead Diva, Raising Hope)… also by the name of Christine, a younger one. Nicknamed “New Christine”, she is annoyed by Richard’s close friendship with “Old Christine”, who holds her in derision, leading to friction between the two women.
Although the delicate work/family balance is hard to maintain, the protagonist struggles to keep pace with those around her. Christine can always rely on her witty best friend and colleague, Barbara “Barb” Baran (Wanda Sykes, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Futurama), whom she most often calls “my black friend Barb”. She has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and usually doesn’t rave about any of Christine’s plans.
Frequently, the latter clashes with the bitchy “meanie-moms”, Marly (Tricia O’Kelley, Gilmore Girls, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Lindsay (Alex Kapp Horner, Friends, Spin City), at her son’s private school. The two make Christine feel inferior for being divorced, having a low income and being a working mother.
