As with magicians, comedians never reveal where jokes come from. The mystery, the surprise at the heart of every gag, remains hidden from view. David Steinberg’s new interview series with his famous fellow comics takes the audience partly behind the curtain. Almost every one of the special guests featured on Inside Comedy got their start doing stand-up. Irrespective of genre, each faces the same essential audience every time he or she appears before the footlights.
David Steinberg is the ideal interviewer. He doesn’t draw attention to himself but is highly tuned in to his subjects, many of whom he knows as his ten fingers. Thus and so, most of his guests relax to the point where they appear more natural and less on the qui vive than they are with other interviewers. The comics tell tales out of school, revealing how to work a room, avoid a vulgar word and move on stage so they can keep their distance from hecklers. Let’s face it, teasing wasn’t always as brutal and nasty as it can be today.
