Set in the latter half of 1967 and early 1968, Aquarius is a cleverly imagined and handsomely realized tale of an old-school, inherently corrupt police force feeling the anger of several social tremors at once. Cheap drugs, rising crime, the youth counterculture, police brutality, free love, protests, the antiwar and black militant movements are radically remaking the world the Greatest Generation saved from fascism 20 years ago. Stealing the limelight is Detective Samson Benedictus “Sam” Hodiak (David Duchovny), a World War II veteran with a weakness for booze and dames, a looming divorce and a son who has gone AWOL from duty in Vietnam.
Things heat up after Sam Hodiak receives a frantic phone call from Grace Karn (Michaela McManus), a former girlfriend, now the wife of an attorney and Republican operative. Apparently, the couple’s 16-year-old daughter, Emma (Emma Dumont), has gone missing in a sea of hippies. Grace begs him to find her offspring, minus any fuss or publicity that would harm her husband’s career. Sam enlists the help of Brian Shafe (Grey Damon), a young, idealistic Narcotics Officer who works undercover in a beard and long hair and is taunted by hippie-hating detectives on the squad. Their confreres aren’t thrilled about women in the work force either. Therefore, Sam and Brian take Charmain Tully (Claire Holt), a rookie Police Officer, under their wing. The generational conflict between the two can’t escape observation, yet they’re both dedicated officers and soon realize the need to bring Emma home is more urgent than they foresaw. The trail leads to Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony), a would-be singer-songwriter with a criminal record and a cult following of brainwashed groupies, and then circles back to an influential lawyer who holds fund-raisers for Richard M. Nixon.
